Dock Restoration

Restoration of a waterfront dock where the original timber structure had rotted through at the bearing points, requiring the frame to be rebuilt before any new decking could be laid.

General location
New Providence, The Bahamas
Service
Exterior and Marine

01Brief

Client Objective

Return the dock to safe, usable condition by rebuilding the structure rather than surfacing over a failed frame.

Construction Approach

The old decking came up first so the condition of every beam and joist could be seen rather than guessed at. Sections that had gone soft were cut out and replaced with treated timber. Joist tops were taped before the new boards went down, which is the detail that decides whether the next failure is in five years or fifteen.

Scope of Work

  • Removal of failed decking and rotted framing
  • Assessment of the remaining structure
  • New treated structural timber where sections had gone
  • Protective membrane to the joist tops
  • Composite decking cut and fixed
  • Edge, step and trim work
  • Removal of the old material from site

Materials Used

  • Treated structural timber
  • Composite decking boards
  • Joist protection membrane
  • Marine grade fixings

02Problem and Response

The Challenge

Working over water and sand with tide and access constraints, on a structure where the extent of the rot was only visible once the surface came off.

The Solution

The dock was worked in sections so the structure stayed stable throughout, with the scope confirmed against what was actually found rather than assumed at quoting stage.
